This is the part that gets skipped. At road speed, ram air does the work. In traffic on Dale Mabry in August, the fans are the entire cooling system.
We regularly see cars with an expensive radiator still running hot in traffic because there is no shroud, the gaps around the core are open, or the fan comes on far too late. Airflow through the core is the whole game, and it is much cheaper to fix than core capacity.
Oil temperature is the number most people never look at and it is frequently what actually limits a Florida car.
Hot oil thins, which reduces the bearing film, which is how bearings fail. It also degrades faster, so the oil is losing its protective additives while it is protecting less.
On an automatic, transmission fluid temperature is a real limit and heat is what kills automatics. A cooler is cheap insurance on a car making significantly more torque.
On a hard-driven car, differential fluid temperature matters too, particularly with a limited slip unit.
Coolant temperature alone is not enough. On a modified Florida car we want to see coolant, oil, intake air, and on an automatic, transmission temperature. You cannot manage what you are not measuring, and the tune uses those inputs to protect the engine. What to log.
