Rod bearings are the early warning system of a modified engine. They fail before the rods do, and the failure is almost always telling you something about oiling, tuning or heat rather than about the bearings themselves.
The bearing never touches the crank journal in normal running. Oil pressure and the rotation of the crank create a hydrodynamic film that the journal rides on. The bearing's job is to survive the moments when that film is thin — startup, extreme load, high temperature.
Everything that kills bearings comes back to that film.
The most common cause on a track or hard-driven car. Sustained cornering, hard braking or acceleration slosh oil away from the pickup, pressure drops momentarily, and the film collapses.
Fixes: baffled pan, windage tray, accusump or dry sump on serious cars, and simply keeping the oil level correct rather than a quart low.
Oil viscosity falls as temperature rises. Florida heat plus a hard-worked engine plus a light oil chosen for economy is a thin film at the worst moment. Choosing oil for a modified engine.
Detonation slams the piston down against the rod and hammers the bearing through the rod. It is a shock load the hydrodynamic film cannot absorb, and it shows as fatigue damage on the bearing surface.
This is the cause that comes back to tuning. A car with persistent knock is destroying bearings whether or not anything else has failed yet.
Too tight and the film cannot establish. Too loose and pressure bleeds off. Clearance has to be measured and set for the intended oil, temperature and power — not assumed from a manual.
Debris in the oil embeds in the bearing surface and scores the journal. Sources: a previous failure not cleaned out properly, machining debris on a fresh build, or simply extended oil change intervals on a hard-worked engine.
Sustained high oil temperature thins the film and accelerates everything above. An oil cooler is frequently the missing item on a Florida build.
Replacing bearings without finding out why they failed means doing it again. The debris pattern, the wear location and the oil condition together tell you whether you are looking at starvation, detonation, clearance or contamination — and each one has a different fix.
Stop driving it. A spun bearing that is caught early is a bearing job; one that is driven on becomes a crank, a rod, and sometimes a block.

A knock or rumble at low RPM under load, usually worst when the oil is hot and pressure is at its lowest. By the time it is audible from the driver's seat, real damage has already happened.
Oil starvation from cornering or acceleration slosh, oil that is too thin for the temperature, detonation hammering the bearing through the rod, incorrect clearances, contamination, or sustained high oil temperature. Each has a different fix, which is why finding the cause matters.
Cut the oil filter open at every change and inspect it, watch oil pressure trends at hot idle, and send oil out for analysis periodically. Analysis picks up copper and lead traces long before anything is audible.
Only after establishing why they failed. Replacing bearings without addressing oiling, tuning, clearance or heat means doing it again. The wear pattern and the oil condition together tell you which cause you are dealing with.
