Suspension for a Street Car: Lower Is Not the Same as Better

Suspension is where the most money gets spent on appearance and the least understanding gets applied. A car that sits lower is not automatically a car that handles better, and on Florida roads it is frequently worse.

What the suspension is doing

Keeping the tires in contact with the road, controlling body movement, and managing weight transfer. Everything else follows from that.

A car that is too stiff or too low skips over surface irregularities rather than following them, and a tire in the air is a tire making no grip. This is exactly the failure mode of a badly lowered street car on an imperfect Tampa road.

The components

Springs

Control ride height and how much force it takes to compress the suspension. Lowering springs on factory dampers is the cheapest route and the most commonly regretted, because the factory dampers were valved for the factory spring rate and cannot control a much stiffer one.

The result is a car that is lower, harsher, and floats or crashes over bumps. That is worn or mismatched damping, not stiffness.

Dampers

Control the speed of suspension movement. This is where ride quality and body control actually live, and it is the component that matters most.

Good dampers on modest springs beat cheap dampers on aggressive springs every time.

Coilovers

Spring and damper as a matched unit, usually with height adjustment and often with damping adjustment.

Bushings

Often the highest-value and least glamorous upgrade on an older car. Worn rubber bushings allow the geometry to move under load, which makes the car vague and inconsistent.

Poly bushings sharpen response and transmit more noise and vibration. Spherical bearings sharpen it further and are usually too much for a street car.

Sway bars

Control body roll and, importantly, adjust the handling balance front to rear. A rear bar upgrade is often the cheapest way to reduce understeer on a street car.

Why lowering has limits

The car will be faster, more comfortable, more consistent and far more usable on real Tampa roads. Ride height is the most visible variable and the least important one for how a car actually performs.

Alignment is not optional afterward

Any suspension change requires an alignment, and it should be set for how you drive the car rather than to factory numbers.

A lowered car with factory alignment specs will wear the inside edges off a set of tires quickly, which is an expensive way to learn. Tires.

A sensible order

  1. Tires first, always.
  2. Replace anything worn — bushings, mounts, ball joints, worn dampers. A lot of 'poor handling' is worn parts.
  3. Dampers and springs, matched, or a quality coilover set.
  4. Sway bars to fine-tune balance.
  5. Alignment, properly specified.
  6. Corrected geometry components if you have lowered far enough to need them.

Questions we get asked

Are lowering springs on stock dampers a bad idea?

Usually. The factory dampers were valved for the factory spring rate and cannot control a much stiffer spring, so the car ends up lower, harsher, and floating or crashing over bumps. Matched springs and dampers are the minimum worth doing.

Do coilovers always improve handling?

No. Quality matters more in this category than almost any other — a cheap coilover set is a worse suspension than the factory one in nearly every measurable way. Good dampers on modest springs beat cheap dampers on aggressive springs.

How low can I go on Florida roads?

Less than you might want. Uneven pavement, driveways, speed humps and heavy afternoon flooding all punish low cars, and past a modest drop the geometry itself works against you and needs corrected components.

Do I need an alignment after suspension work?

Always, and it should be specified for how you drive rather than set to factory numbers. A lowered car on factory alignment specs wears the inside edges off a set of tires very quickly.
