A fresh engine's piston rings seat in the first hours of running. What happens in that window determines the engine's compression, oil consumption and blow-by for the rest of its life, and it cannot be redone later.
New rings and a freshly honed cylinder wall do not seal perfectly. Cylinder pressure pushes the rings outward against the bore, and the microscopic peaks of the hone pattern wear the ring face to match. That is ring seating.
It needs load to happen. Cylinder pressure is what forces the rings against the wall, and without meaningful load the rings never seat properly — they glaze against the bore instead, and the engine will use oil forever.
Which is why the old advice to baby a new engine is wrong in an important way.
The most common break-in mistake is being too gentle. Rings need cylinder pressure to seat, and an engine driven timidly for a thousand miles often ends up with a glazed bore, permanent oil consumption and compression it never recovers.
A fresh engine sheds material. Break-in oil changes are not optional and the intervals are much shorter than normal:
On a boosted build, keep boost low or off entirely for the initial break-in period, then step it up. The tune should be staged for this — a conservative break-in map first, then the real calibration once the engine has miles on it and a compression check confirms it is healthy.
We generally want a car back on the dyno after break-in to finalise the tune on a settled engine rather than a fresh one.
Any of those, bring it in before you put more miles on it.
