There is a category of failure that presents as a tuning problem, gets chased as a tuning problem, and is mechanical. Crankshaft hub slip is the clearest example.
On several popular platforms, the crankshaft pulley or timing hub is retained by friction from a single bolt, with a keyway that is not designed to carry drive torque. Under high cylinder pressure — which is exactly what a boosted build produces — the hub can rotate slightly on the crank.
When it does, the crank position sensor reference moves relative to actual crank position. The ECU now thinks the engine is at a different angle than it is, and every timing and fuelling decision is made against a false reference.
On affected platforms, verifying hub position against the crank with a timing light and a mark is a quick check that has saved a great many engines. Chasing a calibration around a moving reference is chasing something that cannot be fixed in software.
Aftermarket solutions exist for the common platforms — keyed or pinned hubs that carry drive torque mechanically rather than relying on friction. On a boosted build of an affected engine, fitting one before the failure is considerably cheaper than after.
Not every symptom that appears in a log is a calibration problem. Mechanical faults, sensor faults and wiring faults all produce data that looks like tuning issues, and a tuner who only ever adjusts tables will chase them indefinitely.
Part of what we do is establish that the mechanical picture is sound before spending a day on the dyno adjusting numbers around a fault that is not in the software.
