On a lot of boosted builds, the head gasket is the first thing to give up. It is rarely the gasket's fault — it is a clamping force problem.
Cylinder pressure under boost pushes the head away from the block. The head fasteners hold it down. When peak cylinder pressure exceeds what the clamping force can resist, the head lifts momentarily, combustion gases escape past the gasket, and the seal is compromised.
Once it has lifted, the gasket is damaged and it gets worse from there.
Detonation makes this dramatically worse, because detonation spikes cylinder pressure far above what normal combustion produces. Many 'blown head gasket' failures are really tuning failures.
Studs are the standard upgrade on a boosted build, and on some platforms they are effectively mandatory past modest power.
Adding head studs to a car that is knocking buys you time before the gasket lifts. It does not stop the detonation, which is meanwhile damaging pistons, ring lands and bearings. Fix the tune and the fuel — studs are for cylinder pressure you have deliberately chosen, not pressure you did not intend.
Gasket thickness also changes compression ratio slightly, which is sometimes used deliberately to fine-tune the effective compression.
MLS gaskets need a smoother surface than composite gaskets did. Reusing an old, corroded or warped deck surface with a new MLS gasket is a common reason a fresh gasket fails quickly.
If the head is off, checking flatness and finish is not optional.

We would rather find out why a gasket failed than just replace it. Bring it in with any datalogs you have.
Past modest power on most platforms, yes. Studs load the head without twisting, so clamping force is more consistent and generally higher than head bolts — and cylinder pressure lifting the head is what causes gasket failure under boost.
They address clamping force, which is often the cause. But if detonation is what spiked cylinder pressure in the first place, studs only delay the next failure while the knock continues damaging pistons and bearings. Fix the tune first.
Coolant loss with no external leak, persistent white smoke, bubbles or pressurisation in the coolant reservoir, oil and coolant mixing, a misfire on one cylinder under boost, or unexplained overheating. A combustion gas test on the coolant confirms it.
Multi-layer steel is the standard for boosted applications. It requires a good surface finish on both block and head, which is why reusing an old or warped deck surface is a common reason a fresh MLS gasket fails quickly.
