The most common gap between what somebody expects a build to cost and what it costs is not markup. It is everything that is not on the parts list.
What people budget for
The headline components. A turbo, a manifold, injectors, a fuel pump, an intercooler. Those are the items with part numbers and prices, and they are the easy part of the estimate.
What they usually do not budget for
Supporting systems. Fuelling, cooling, ignition and drivetrain all have to keep up with the new output. Skipping one is how a build fails.
Gaskets, hardware, fluids and consumables, which on a substantial build is a real number.
Fabrication. Almost nothing bolts on perfectly. Brackets, piping routing, clearance work and mounting all take time.
Labour to remove things twice, which happens on any build where access requires it.
Diagnosis and correction of what is already wrong — and on a used car there is nearly always something.
Dyno time and calibration, which is not a bolt-on service. It is hours of iterative work.
Contingency for what is found, which on an engine build is not optional.
The things found along the way
Opening an engine reveals its history. Worn bearings, a scored bore, a previous repair done badly, a cracked head. None of that is in the estimate because nobody knew about it, and none of it can responsibly be ignored once found.
How to budget honestly
Decide the actual goal first — a number, a use case, or a feeling. They lead to different builds.
Get the supporting systems specified alongside the headline parts rather than after.
Add real contingency for anything involving opening the engine.
Include calibration time in the budget rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Plan the order so money is not spent twice — supporting mods before power, not after.
Be honest about whether the car is a good base. Sometimes the answer is a different car.
Where we would rather spend it
Cooling, fuelling and calibration, before the last few pounds of boost. A car built that way is slower on paper and faster in reality, because it is not pulling timing on every warm afternoon.
What we will tell you
If a budget does not cover a safe version of what somebody wants, we say so and we lay out the options: reduce the target, stage the build, or spend more. We would rather have that conversation than build something that fails.
