Forced Induction
Both compress intake air so the engine can burn more fuel. How they get driven, and what that does to the way the car feels, is where they diverge completely.
A turbocharger is driven by exhaust gas. Energy that was leaving as heat and pressure spins a turbine, which spins a compressor on a shared shaft. It is recovering waste energy, which is why turbos are efficient.
A supercharger is driven mechanically by the crankshaft, usually by a belt. It consumes engine power to make more engine power, and the net is strongly positive — but it is a parasitic load in a way a turbo is not.
If you want instant response and a big-engine character everywhere, a positive displacement supercharger is hard to beat. If you want maximum power and the ability to dial it up later, a turbo gives you more headroom for the money. Both are correct answers to different questions.
Turbos are more thermally efficient overall, but they put a lot of heat into the engine bay because the turbine is bolted to the exhaust. That is a real consideration in Florida — underhood temperature management matters more on a turbo car.
Superchargers, particularly positive displacement units, add significant heat to the charge itself, which is why intercooling is essentially mandatory on them here. Roots blowers in particular are less efficient at higher pressure ratios and the charge temperature climbs quickly.
Either way, heat management is the Florida problem and it should be budgeted from the start.
Turbo installs are more involved. Exhaust manifold or header, turbo mounting, oil feed and drain lines, coolant lines on many units, wastegate, blow-off or bypass valve, charge piping in both directions, intercooler and its mounting. There is a lot of packaging.
Supercharger kits, particularly well-developed ones for popular platforms, are often more contained — bracketry, belt routing, an intercooler on many, and the intake side. Fewer places for it to go wrong, and fewer custom fabrication decisions.
On a platform with a mature supercharger kit, the install is usually simpler. On a platform without one, a turbo build may actually be the more straightforward path.
Both are significant. Broadly, a supercharger kit for a supported platform tends to be a more predictable number, and a turbo build has more variables — but a turbo build reaches a higher ceiling for the same spend once you are past the entry level.
What people underbudget in both cases is everything except the compressor. Fuel system, cooling, clutch or transmission, and tuning are the majority of a real build. What has to happen before you add boost.
Supercharger if you want a car that feels transformed everywhere, drives like stock when you are not on it, and you value response over peak numbers.
Turbo if you want the biggest number for the money, you want the option to raise it later, and you are happy with power that arrives with a bit of build rather than instantly.
There is no wrong answer here. There is only picking the one that matches how you actually drive.
A turbo generally reaches a higher ceiling for the same money, because it recovers exhaust energy rather than consuming crank power and because boost is easily raised later. A supercharger makes its power more immediately across the whole rev range.
Off boost, a turbo car is generally more efficient because the turbo is not being driven when you are not on it. A belt-driven supercharger is always turning, so it carries a parasitic load even at cruise.
Far less than the reputation suggests. Lag is largely a turbo sizing decision — a correctly sized modern turbo for a street car spools early enough that most drivers never think about it. Oversizing for a peak number is what creates lag.
On a platform with a well-developed supercharger kit, the supercharger — fewer custom decisions and less packaging. On a platform without one, a turbo build is often the more straightforward path because the components are more universal.
