Forced Induction
Anybody who has run a boosted car at a Florida track day knows the pattern. The first run is the quickest. The second is slower. The third is slower again. That is heat soak, and it is the single biggest constraint on a boosted car in this climate.
Compressing air heats it. That is unavoidable physics — a turbocharger or supercharger raises intake air temperature substantially as a by-product of raising pressure. The intercooler exists to take that heat back out before the air reaches the engine.
An intercooler works by transferring heat to ambient air moving through it. When the car is moving, that works. When the car is sitting at a light in Tampa in August, or making repeated pulls with no cool-down between, the core itself becomes heat soaked and it stops being able to absorb any more.
A dyno pull on a cool morning with a fan on the car is close to the best case. It tells you very little about what the car does on its fifth run in August, which is the number that actually matters to how the car feels to own.
A build specified for the best possible dyno figure is a build specified for a condition that does not exist in August. We would rather set a car up so the fifth pull is close to the first, and that means spending on cooling before spending on the last few pounds of boost.
