Building a Car That Lives Near Salt Water

August 27, 2026 · 6 min read · GZ Performance, Tampa FL

A build in St. Pete, Apollo Beach or anywhere along the coast faces something a build in Lakeland does not: continuous salt-laden air, and it finds every unprotected fastener under the car.

What actually corrodes

The failure is at the fastener

Almost nobody replaces a component because it corroded. They replace it because the fastener holding it seized, rounded off and had to be cut. Hardware choice determines how a car is to work on in three years.

Choices worth making at build time

  1. Stainless or coated fasteners on anything exposed, particularly exhaust.
  2. Anti-seize on threads at assembly — this is free and it is the single best thing you can do for future serviceability.
  3. Dielectric grease on electrical connections, applied outside the contact area.
  4. Coated or stainless exhaust rather than mild steel, which is a real cost difference and a real longevity difference on the coast.
  5. Undercoating or protection on exposed fabricated components.
  6. Avoiding dissimilar metal contact where you can, or isolating it where you cannot.

Maintenance that matters here

Rinsing the underside of the car with fresh water is the single most effective habit, and it is the one people skip because it is awkward. On a car kept near the water it is not optional if you want the hardware to last.

Beyond that: check and protect grounds annually, look at exhaust hardware before it seizes rather than after, and deal with any paint or coating damage promptly because bare metal here does not stay bare.

Why we raise it

A build is a multi-year investment. Specifying the cheapest hardware saves money once and costs it repeatedly, and on the coast the interval between those two is short.
