Tuning
Almost every boosted engine we see with a hole in a piston died of the same thing, and it is not usually a single dramatic event. It is repeated detonation that nobody was watching for.
Normal combustion is a flame front that starts at the spark plug and travels across the chamber in a controlled way. Pressure rises smoothly and the piston is pushed down.
Detonation is different. Pressure and temperature in the end gas — the mixture furthest from the plug — rise high enough that it ignites spontaneously before the flame front arrives. Two pressure waves collide, and the resulting spike is violent, sharp and enormously higher than designed.
That spike is what hammers ring lands, cracks pistons and pounds rod bearings. It also makes a distinctive noise, which is what a knock sensor listens for.
Every one of the factors above is worse in high ambient temperature. A calibration that is safe on a 60-degree morning can be marginal on a 95-degree afternoon with heat-soaked intake air, which is exactly why we tune with a temperature margin rather than to the edge.
A modern ECU has knock sensors and it retards timing when it detects knock. That protection is real and it is not a substitute for a calibration that does not knock in the first place.
The reason: knock detection is reactive. It responds after an event has occurred. Relying on it means the engine is being knocked repeatedly and pulled back, over and over, and cumulative damage does not care that the ECU responded.
Stop driving it hard and get it looked at. The cheapest possible outcome is a fuel quality problem or a calibration that needs a temperature-aware adjustment. The expensive outcome is what happens if it is ignored for a few months.
