E85 is the cheapest horsepower available on a forced induction car, and it comes with a list of consequences that nobody mentions until you are living with them.
On a turbocharged car with the fuel system to support it, the difference between a 93 tune and an E85 tune is not subtle.
E85 is not 85% ethanol. It is a range, and it varies by season, by region and by station. Actual content commonly falls anywhere from the mid-fifties to the mid-eighties percent.
That matters because the tune depends on it. A calibration written for E80 running on E60 is running lean; running on E85 when tuned for E70 is running rich and down on the timing it could have had.
Two ways to handle it:
Without a content sensor, E85 on a street car means either testing every tank or accepting that your tune is approximate. With one, you can mix fuels freely, run whatever the station has, and the car adapts. On a daily driver it is not an optional extra.
Yes, if: the car is turbocharged or supercharged, you have or will install the fuel system to support it, you have a reliable station, and you drive the car regularly enough that fuel does not sit.
Probably not, if: the car is naturally aspirated — the gain is much smaller and rarely justifies the hardware; the car sits for months at a time; you cannot reliably get E85; or you are not prepared to install a flex fuel sensor and would rather not test every tank.
On some platforms, blending — running a partial ethanol mix rather than full E85 — gets you a meaningful share of the knock resistance without maxing the fuel system. With a flex fuel sensor the car handles the blend automatically.
This is often the sweet spot for a street car that sees the occasional track day.
