Tuning
People book a dyno tune expecting a number. The number is the last thing that happens and it is the least useful thing we learn.
A tune amplifies whatever the engine is already doing, including the bad parts. So the session starts with a health check:
If we find something, we tell you before the tune rather than after. Tuning a car with a boost leak is charging you for a session that has to be repeated.
The car goes on the dyno as it arrives and we make a pull on the factory or existing calibration.
This does two things. It gives an honest before figure to measure against, and more importantly it tells us how the engine behaves — where the torque comes in, whether there is knock activity, whether air-fuel ratio does anything strange, whether intake temperatures climb faster than they should.
Then we make pull after pull, changing one thing at a time and watching the data.
Most of a session is spent here. The tuner is not chasing a number; they are finding the edges of what the car can do safely and then backing off from them deliberately.
The most valuable output of a session is often not the power figure — it is discovering that the fuel pump is at its limit, that the intercooler is heat soaking, or that the engine has a mechanical issue nobody knew about. Better to find that on the rollers than at 80 mph.
A dyno cell is climate controlled and airflow is forced. Real driving is not. A car tuned to the ragged edge in perfect conditions is a car with no margin left when it is stuck in traffic in July with the AC on.
We deliberately leave headroom. It costs a few peak horsepower on paper and it is the difference between a car that lives and a car that does not. Florida makes this a bigger factor than most places.
A dyno measures wide-open throttle. Ninety-five percent of your driving is not wide-open throttle.
Part-throttle drivability, cruise behaviour, cold starts, idle quality, transmission shift feel — none of that is fully resolved on the rollers. A proper tune includes road time to sort out how the car behaves in the conditions you actually drive it in.
Dyno figures are not comparable between dynos. Different types read differently, correction factors differ, and the same car can read meaningfully different on two machines a mile apart.
What is comparable is before and after on the same dyno on the same day. That is the number worth caring about, and it is the one we give you.
Usually a full day for a straightforward calibration on healthy hardware, longer if the car is heavily modified or if we find problems during the health check. Plan to leave the car with us rather than waiting on it.
Dyno types and correction factors are not comparable between shops, and conditions, fuel and hardware all differ. The only meaningful comparison is your car's before and after on the same dyno on the same day.
Fresh plugs at the correct heat range, an oil change, the fuel you intend to run in the tank, and any known mechanical issues fixed. Tuning around a fault buries it rather than solving it.
Yes. The dyno resolves wide-open throttle; part-throttle drivability, cruise, cold start, idle and shift feel need road time. A tune that only happened on the rollers is half finished.
