Forced Induction
This is the modification most often bought for the sound and most often causing a running problem afterward. Both things can be true at once.
When you lift off the throttle at boost, the throttle plate slams shut while the compressor is still spinning hard. All that pressurised air has nowhere to go and it reverses back through the compressor wheel.
That reversal — compressor surge, and the fluttering sound that comes with it — decelerates the turbo hard and puts real load on the thrust bearing. Over time it kills turbos.
The valve gives the air somewhere to go instead.
Mechanically they do the same job of protecting the turbo. The difference is where the air goes afterward, and on some cars that matters a great deal.
On a mass-airflow car, the sensor has already measured that air and the ECU has already calculated fuel for it. Venting it to atmosphere means the engine receives fuel for air that is no longer there.
Result: a rich stumble on lift-off, hesitation on the next throttle application, sometimes a stall, and occasionally a check engine light. It is not imaginary and it is not something a tune fully fixes — the ECU cannot un-measure air that has left the system.
On a speed-density car, which calculates airflow from manifold pressure rather than measuring it upstream, atmospheric venting causes far fewer problems. This is why the same valve is fine on one car and a nuisance on another.
The single question that determines whether an atmospheric blow-off valve will cause you trouble is whether your car is MAF-based or speed-density. Buying the valve first and asking afterward is how people end up with a car that stalls at every stop sign.
The fluttering sound people associate with turbo cars is compressor surge — the exact thing the valve exists to prevent. It is not a performance feature. Cars that flutter loudly are cars with no valve, a leaking valve, or one that is not opening.
It sounds good and it is shortening the life of the turbo.
Bring it in. This is a quick diagnosis and usually a straightforward fix.

Recirculating bypass on a MAF-based car, without exception if you want it to drive properly. On a speed-density car either works and it is a preference. Dual port valves are a compromise that reduces but does not eliminate the drivability penalty.
Yes. A valve with too soft a spring for the boost level leaks under pressure, which behaves as a boost leak that only appears near the top of a pull. It is a genuinely difficult symptom to chase if you are not looking for it.
