Air-fuel ratio gets discussed as a single number and it is really a target that moves depending on what the engine is being asked to do.
For pump gasoline, stoichiometric is around 14.7 parts air to one part fuel by mass — the ratio at which, in theory, all the fuel and all the oxygen are consumed. That is where an engine runs at cruise for emissions and economy.
Lambda is the same idea expressed as a ratio to stoichiometric, and it is more useful because it is fuel-independent. Lambda 1.00 is stoichiometric whether you are running pump gas, E85 or race fuel. That matters because E85 stoichiometric is a completely different AFR number, and quoting AFR without saying what fuel is meaningless.
At wide-open throttle on a boosted engine, the target moves substantially richer than stoichiometric. Extra fuel does two things beyond making power: it cools the charge through the latent heat of vaporisation, and it moves the mixture away from the conditions that produce detonation.
How rich depends on the fuel, the boost, the compression ratio and the intake air temperature. There is no single correct number and anyone quoting one without those variables is guessing.
When comparing targets between cars or fuels, use lambda. AFR numbers are only comparable within the same fuel, and a great deal of internet advice ignores that.
